Family Portrait

I want to lock this moment into memory: Jan 3, 2010, surrounded by loved ones, all healthy and happy, breathing the fresh, cool air of the majestic Ko’olau mountains. Love you guys. Kevin, we will miss you!IMG_5378IMG_5377

Thanksgiving 2009

Turkey devoured, decorations hung, and sales galore, it’s tempting to charge full force towards Christmas with Thanksgiving now behind us.  But one day of gratitude is not enough… let’s not stop giving thanks, for God’s mercy and blessings are new every morning.  On thankfulness, here are a few photos to remember last week by: Thanksgiving2My favorite people in the entire world! (missing Kevin, of course!) (sorry E, this was the best photo I had of you :P ): Thanksgiving1And perhaps the start of a new Thanksgiving tradition: Thanksgiving3I just realized that we had 5 nearly-consecutive meals with my family last week (dinner-lunch-dinner-lunch-dinner), which is crazy/awesome–especially considering I’ve spent Thanksgiving away from them for the last eight years.  It’s like we’re making up for lost time!

Love is Hot Rice

Today is a special date: 28 years since my parents first vowed to love one another as husband and wife.  But it is also a very ordinary day in 28 years of marriage and counting.  This morning they woke up as usual, my mom got ready for work, probably fixed my dad’s hair as they were waiting for the elevator, and by 6:33am they were in the car en route to the hospital.  This evening, my dad will probably line the stove and prep ingredients for dinner, then as it gets close to the end of her shift, he will cook all of it–except for the rice.  When the phone rings and she’s ready to go (hallelujah!), he will push the ‘cook’ button and head out to pick her up.  Because he knows that she likes her rice hot.  And so they can eat together.  134_3489Mom and Dad, thank you for teaching me that the strength of a marriage is not measured by flowers and chocolate, fine jewelry and fancy restaurants.  Instead, it is demonstrated in very ordinary ways… knowing each other’s likes and dislikes, serving one another daily, being faithful in the trivial and unseen.  Thank you for assuring me that it is normal to drive each other crazy 20% of the time, and that over time you learn one another’s buttons (but don’t necessarily stop pushing them) (but at least resolve each incident a little quicker).  Thank you for being two imperfect people who are perfect for each other… you are a blessing and an inspiration.  Happy Anniversary and may God bless you always!!

Family Dinner

Last Saturday, we hosted our first family dinner complete with 5-course meal + fruit + dessert.  I can’t really take credit, though, cause my mom came up with the menu, went shopping with me, and basically did most of the cooking. Thanks, Mom! : )  Eric and I were merely the sous chefs.  Still, it was a lot of fun!

The menu:
- Cucumber mushroom salad w/ papaya seed dressing
- Smoked salmon seaweed wraps
- Shrimp and tomato
- Asparagus w/ cream of mushroom
- Curried oxtail and carrots

Shout-out : Dad

My dad’s birthday was this week and I just wanted to post two of my favorite childhood pictures with him.  I remember the days he used to sandwich me between two pillows and carry me—laughing, screaming, and kicking—into the kitchen, to “put the sandwich back in the fridge.”  And all those logic puzzles he made me solve.  They probably have something to do with why I’m an engineer!  I love you, Dad.  Another year wiser but still ever handsome!
